About Us
Village School is a New York State accredited high school program geared toward student individualization and academic excellence. Twenty-two credits, distributed according to New York State requirements and Great Neck standards, are required for graduation.
All of the courses offered at Village School are ungraded; instead, credits are earned for successful completion of courses. This is accomplished through regular attendance, a reasonable homework record, participation, class work and completion of any required projects. Assessment is individualized to meet the needs and expectations of each student.
Our program includes SAT tutoring, college application assistance, a full one-to-one iPad program, internship opportunities, and so much more. We bring the parent, student, and faculty together as a powerful team, so no student ever gets lost in the shuffle. Village School is thoroughly supported by our Board of Education and the community at large. Village School is what alternative education is supposed to be.
Village School
By the Numbers
The maximum number of students enrolled at any given time. This allows for smaller class sizes, greater personalization of curriculum, and a school community that truly knows and trusts one another.
The percentage of seniors who graduated on time during the 2013-2015 academic years. With rare exception, all of our graduates go on to attend college.
The year Village School was opened by a group of progressive thinkers who understood that when it comes to education, one size does not fit all.
The number of bridges we cross during our annual NYC field trip. First we walk over the Manhattan Bridge, then make our way to famed pizzerias, "Juliana's", and "Grimaldi's", for a delicious taste testing. With full bellies, we then cross over the Brooklyn Bridge, snapping pictures along the way.
Our Story
Founded over 40 years ago, Village School is part of a rich history of alternative education born out of a counterculture movement that made its way into classrooms across the nation. While the majority of alternative schools established during that era have long since closed, Village not only survived, but has become the nation's trendsetter in alternative education.
Many surrounding Long Island districts send administrators and teachers to visit Village before giving shape to their own programs. But although imitation is often the sincerest form of flattery, there is only one Village School.
